fring — free calls on your 3G handset
fring will install an application on your Nokia handset that supports Symbian. It will then let you call other fring, Skype and GoogleTalk users for free, or regular phone numbers for a charge. How it works diagram. It wasn’t really obvious from their site what’s free and what’s not, and there was no “Purchase” link. If they’re offering also the regular phone calling and SMS for free, it must be surely a limited time offer.
They have a downloadable user guide, unlike many other apps including Skype. Nicely written. Turns out from there you have to give it your Skype Name and password?!!!?! Not a good idea security-wise. Apparently it uses these to pull your Skype contact list.
Hi Jaanus,
Hope you’re well - I thought you might be interested in one of our newest clients - fring, given the Skype links.
fring is soon to launch, and will offer the only PC independent, completely free mobile VoIP service. We’re currently in the pilot stage, but wanted to give you a heads up on the service.
The fring software is available as a download to your mobile from: http://fring.com/
It’ll offer 100% free calls, with no subscription – users simply pay for the data they use under their existing mobile plans.
fring will work anywhere in the world using local 3G networks, and isn’t Skype or WiFi zone dependent. It also works without any proprietary hardware, and allows users to operate both GoogleTalk and Skype systems.
As this is at an early stage of development, the application will only work on certain mobile handsets including Nokia Series 60 and N series. Currently, 3 users receive the best service, but feedback has also shown good performance on Orange networks.
If you need anymore on installing the fring software, the website should explain it all, but if not feel free to contact me on the email below and I’ll be able to help.
Best regards,
Kristoff
