Crashing printer drivers in Mac OS X
You shouldn’t have to restart your computer simply because you connected a new printer.
Oh yeah? Well guess what. Even though I’m a Mac fanboy now, it doesn’t mean that everything is hunky dory in the OS X world. I’ve more than once found it hard way that it’s the printer drivers that can make things crash instantly. Indeed, not the whole system, but the application you’re currently running. And I’m pissed as I yesterday lost two hours of work because of not saving every five seconds (I admit, my bad, you should do this always and everywhere. But still…).
OS X has a problem with HP drivers. At least for the LasterJet 3020/3030 model, but maybe others as well. And how it goes is: you add a new printer and configure it to this type. The moment you try to print something from any application to this printer, the application CRASHES INSTANTLY. I’ve done this with Firefox and Keynote and some others as well.
I have no idea what exactly is going on there. All I know is that everything I use is legit and out-of-the-box without nasty tweaks. And it’s the worst instability I currently have in OS X. Annoying as hell.
The solution is simply to change the printer type from this HP to “Generic”, so that it shows up as “Generic Postscript printer”. The print quality looks all the same and good as far as I can tell.
