HiI'mJaanus.Blog,Works.

The Spirent B2B releases are too complicated for me, and how the infosecurity industry will become obsolete

Enough of politics on this blog. Back to technology. :)

Now, I’m sure that Spirent Communications is a respectable company with great products. But the trouble is that it’s all over my little head. They sent me the two following press releases. It’s difficult for me to understand what they are talking about in the first place, let alone whether it’s any important or good or not. It sounds more like a stylized version of bullshit bingo than meaningful simple English text, it’s so full of terms and buzzwords that it just makes my poor little head go round. Again, I’m sure it’s all fine and dandy and there are many people and businesses out there to who it actually means something, I’m just not one of them and it’s not my area of interest.

Here’s something interesting on top of that. I was going to Spirent’s website and saw that a large part of their product line deals with security. Now here’s something that I get a little more about. But just today, I also read a post on Bruce Schneier’s blog that argues that down the road, the whole IT security industry will become somewhat obsolete, as vendors get more and more incentives to make their products secure in the first place, so that you wouldn’t need to purchase an extra layer of security around that. Of course it’s more complicated than that; read Bruce’s post for the whole thing.

Hello Jaanus,

I hope your day is going well. Below is the news release that Spirent issued today at Spring VON. If you are interested in learning more, then please let us know.

SPIRENT® COMMUNICATIONS ENABLES STREAMLINED TESTING OF IMS SERVICES

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Mar. 20, 2007 - Spirent Communications plc (NYSE: SPM; LSE: SPT), a global provider of performance analysis and service assurance solutions, today announced the availability of test cases and methodologies to streamline the verification of new revenue-generating IMS services. Spirent’s IMS solutions and its new test cases will allow service providers to minimize service development time while maximizing subscriber Quality of Experience (QoE).”As the architecture is deployed, operators are looking to recoup their investments as IMS services are rolled out,” said Vanessa Alvarez, Associate Analyst, Enabling Technologies at Yankee Group. “Spirent’s knowledge of and involvement with the IMS industry allows them to build great insight into their test solutions. Testing with solutions like Spirent’s will enable IMS services to deliver the investment dividends that operators are counting on.”

Spirent has developed a dedicated suite of pre-packaged test cases that conform to Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) standards in order to validate these services prior to deployment. Its new test cases for IMS services are enabling leading vendors to verify the functionality of IMS network elements prior to delivery to operators. Spirent has developed the new test cases based on industry standards, yet has built in the flexibility for customers to customize the test plans for proprietary implementations. Spirent solutions allow for the prototyping of many new services in the lab, a critical tool for operators to roll out new multimedia services rapidly to realize the benefits of IMS on ARPU.

“IMS has gone from a concept to a here-and-now service deployment architecture,” said Andy Huckridge, director of IMS Solutions at Spirent Communications. Huckridge also chairs the Interoperability Working Group within the MultiService Forum (MSF). “The impact IMS stands to have on revenue streams has forced vendors and operators to pay close attention to service quality and to combine existing service offerings. Spirent has developed these new test cases to enable our IMS customers to ensure their time to revenue is as short as possible, while maximizing the QoE of their downstream subscribers right from the start.”

Spirent recognizes the need for a streamlined way for both vendors and operators to verify new IMS revenue generating services, such as PoC, Presence and XDM before they are launched. Its leadership and experience with leading equipment vendors and carriers, industry forums and standards bodies allows customers to maximize today’s growth opportunities with a vision towards technologies of the future. This expertise has been built into Spirent’s new IMS test cases to deliver our customers the best possible tool for the testing of pre-deployment IMS service roll-outs.

SPIRENT® COMMUNICATIONS ANNOUNCES COMMERCIAL AVAILABILITY OF ITS AUTOMATED MEDIAFLOT TEST SYSTEM

Spirent’s FLO1-ATS provides complete, automated minimum performance testing of MediaFLO-capable mobile devices

Sunnyvale, Calif. - (March 27, 2007) - Spirent Communications plc (NYSE: SPM; LSE: SPT), a global provider of performance analysis and service management solutions, announced today the availability of its test system for MediaFLO-enabled mobile devices, the first to include full test automation. Spirent’s FLO1-ATS allows network operators and device manufacturers to ensure the quality of experience for subscribers receiving MediaFLO services by thoroughly qualifying MediaFLO-enabled device performance prior to deployment.

MediaFLO is based on FLOT technology, a globally-recognized air interface standard that is supported by the FLO Forum and more than 70+ industry members. It is designed specifically to increase wireless network capacity and coverage and to reduce multimedia delivery costs. It is complementary to existing 2G/3G networks.

Spirent’s FLO1-ATS is an integrated system that automates testing per the TIA-1102 minimum performance test specification. It brings complete automation to FLO minimum performance testing, resulting in reduced test times and faster time-to-market. The system’s automation also improves consistency, which greatly reduces human errors in the testing process, and improves the accuracy and reliability in measurements and test results. The fully integrated, stand-alone system requires no additional hardware to deliver FLO I testing for MediaFLO-enabled devices.

“With FLO1-ATS, Spirent continues its leadership in providing integrated, optimized and fully automated test solutions to the mobile industry,” said Nigel Wright, vice president of product marketing at Spirent. “As part of Spirent’s commitment to enabling the success of Mobile TV services, we now have an automated system to ensure that MediaFLO-enabled devices meet performance requirements.”

MediaFLO is designed to enable revolutionary new wireless services and deliver high-quality multi-media to wireless users. Spirent’s FLO1-ATS is a powerful, automated system that helps device manufacturers and service providers achieve their goals of minimizing deployment problems and improving end-user satisfaction with MediaFLO-based services.

Spirent’s FLO1-ATS addresses the requirements of FLO minimum performance testing, evaluating a FLO receiver’s performance and ability to demodulate under a variety of real-world conditions. It provides a highly accurate channel emulation capability to simulate AWGN, co-channel interference and multi-path fading over different channel profiles. Precise timing and filtering mechanisms satisfy the stringent signal and noise requirements inherent to FLO testing. Ready-to-run test cases improve testing productivity, while offering flexibility to support customized test suites.
