Visual Spider for Mac OS X
The project involved studying the current state of software for auditing personal computers for Personally Identifiable Information (PII) such as Social Security Numbers, credit card numbers and other similar data. It is part of the larger effort of Carnegie Mellon Infosecurity Office to help faculty, staff and students preventing identity theft by finding PII stored on their computers, file shares or external media and providing them with the ability to easily and quickly protect or securely delete it.
I studied the user experience of current solutions on both the Mac and Windows platforms, and implemented a usable frontend to the Cornell Spider on Mac OS X. The UI implementation is in Java and can be enhanced to work on other UNIX-based platforms with minimal effort. The software is currently pending public release. The source is available from me upon request.
